Migraine is a type of headache that can severely throbbing pain or pulsing sensation, usually on one side of the head. It is usually associated with nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine attacks can last for hours to days, and pain can be so severe that it interferes with daily activities.
A few hours or days before the headache, about 60% of people have migraine symptoms such as:
1. Sensitivity to light, sound or smell
2. Tiredness
3. Food cravings or loss of appetite
4. Mood changes
5. Intense thirst
6. Swelling
7. Constipation or diarrhea
These symptoms arise from your nervous system and often involve your vision. They usually begin slowly, over a period of 5 to 20 minutes, and last for less than an hour. These may include:
1. See black dots, wavy lines, flashes of light, or things that aren’t there (hallucinations)
2. Have tunnel vision
3. Not be able to see at all
4. Have tingling or numbness on one side of your body
5. Not be able to speak clearly
6. Have a heavy feeling in your arms and legs
7. Have ringing in your ears
8. Notice changes in smell, taste, or touch
This condition may last for a day after the headache. Symptoms include:
1. Feeling tired, fatigued, or cranky
2. Feeling unusually refreshed or happy
3. Muscle pain or weakness
4. Food cravings or loss of appetite
Your doctor will ask about your health history and your symptoms. It may help if you keep a diary of your symptoms and any triggers you notice. Write:
1. What symptoms do you have, including pain?
2. How many times do you have? How long do they last?
3. Other family members who have migraines.
4. All medicines and supplements you take, even over-the-counter ones.
5. Other medicines you remember taking in the past.
Your doctor may order tests to rule out other things that may be causing your symptoms, including:
1. Blood test
2. Imaging tests such as MRI or CT scan
3. Electroencephalogram (EEG)
